The USA Board of Supervisors’ laws community feedback collectively to move a command that would ban any city department from using facial recognition technology or any information acquired from it. It would also require city departments to get approval from the Board of Supervisors before buying other observation technology ― including license plate readers, body cameras and bio-metrics technology, among other products.

If moved, San Francisco would be the first city in the vision to ban facial recognition. The full Board of inspectors will take a final vote on the directive next week. And nearby Oakland will vote on a match pattern later this month.

“The readiness for facial recognition technology to risk civil rights and civil liberties significantly outweighs its purported advantages,” the San Francisco ordinance reads. “And the technology will aggravate racial injustice and threaten our capacity to live free of continuous government monitoring.”

The legislation also notes that actual, surveillance has been used to “intimidate and oppress certain communities and community more than others,” namely racial and religious less than half.

Facial recognition technology is capable, notably because it often improperly verifies darker-skinned people.

In one standard-profile example last year, Amazon’s facial recognition tool inaccurate similarity the faces of 28 lawmakers with people in mug shots and extremely misidentified people of color in a test by the ACLU.

“We know face examination technology is less correct for people of color, and a misidentification could subject people to ethnic biased police violence,”

“But even if the technology was excellently correct, it is still too risky to deploy against the public. Face surveillance would thoroughly and massively expand the government’s power to track and control people going about their private lives.”
